I thought it was a very courageous decision he made.
Question Author
you would.
I am with Jeremy. I have neither stood for or sung the national anthem for years...that does not make me anti British. It suggests that the royal family have done nothing to earn my respect. I always thought that part of being British was showing tolerance for other peoples opinions .... evidently I was wrong
Evee seen "Yes Minister", TTT?
Question Author
yes apologies jim, slow on the uptake this morning.
That's fine. So long as we understand each other!
Question Author
yes mally but you are not the leader of her majesty's opposition, with all the rights and privileges, you have not sworn allegiance to the Queen when you took your seat, you don't have your front 2 trotters in the westminster trough.
If, and I say "IF" he ever becomes the Prime Minister, will he refuse to attend the weekly audiences with the Queen?
There's nothing like an attack on their ancient elitist rituals to upset the Right Brigade.
Question Author
nice of you to join us from CCL canary!
Oddly Tora x3 I thought that the government were there to serve us as a nation and not the queen. The queen is solely a figurehead with no power so as such is not important to the general running of the country.
Question Author
yes, indeed, but irrelevant, the current law is clear, they all must swear allegiance, Jezza has done so, so he already has violated his own principles for the wages.
Perhaps he thought he was just being nice to a very old irrelevant lady in order to make some changes that would be of benefit to the majority of the country. Not every one solely chases the pound for their own gain... luckily there are some Britons with an altruistic approach to what they do ...... I am just waiting for someone to find out that his forebears were immigrants and start shouting about that .... oh no .. the queen is of immigrant stock (as are we all!)
Were it not for the fact that he's Leader of HM's Loyal Opposition, I'd have some sympathy for Corbyn. I'm no republican, and dour as it sounds I will always stand for/ join in the National Anthem. But I remember feeling incredibly awkward as a child when, say, at church or in the Scouts, prayers were said and religious songs would be sung. Being no longer religious at the point, joining in felt hypocritical even, let alone awkward, especially in the prayers. So I would refuse to join in -- not meant as a statement of my contempt, but out of respect for those who were participating. I don't know if it came across that way or not but I'd have sympathy with anyone not wanting to join in to something they disagreed with, meant as a statement or not.

But I am/ was a child nobody cared about particularly, whereas Corbyn is the leader of a party with ambitions to serve as HM's government, and not singing under the glare of TV cameras and the media. A refusal to join in, even if meant for honorable reasons, is bound to come across the wrong way, and he must be far more careful in future to show respect where it is due. I'm not convinced he will, though.
@AOG

I assume you mean the Privy Council...he'll go if for no other reason than to stay in the loop...i cant imagine his traiterous presence there is needed let alone wanted though...
Most of us have respect for others and put it above our own views.

I too disapprove of the Monarchy, but I sing the National Anthem

I am also not in the slightest religious, but at a friends wedding the other day I sang along with them.

It did not compromise my views, but it did show my respect for theirs.

Corbyn has no respect for anyone but himself. He is a very self centered bigot and it will, eventually bite him in the bum.

Yes and we all know the Lefties Red Brigade's 'ancient elitist rituals' towards it's monarchy, wasn't it to take them down a cellar and shoot them?
