i recieve housing benefit for a house which i rent from a private landlord.

he has told me that the mortgage payments for the house i am renting from him have gone up

I spoke to the council and they told me i have to cover the shortfall myself as i allready recieve the maximum ammount of benefit.

There is no way i can cover the shortfall so my father has aggreed to buy a house and let it to me (buy to let)

Will i still be able to claim housing benefit?

yes it will be ok, cos my dad and i did the same thing, as long as it is done properly with tenacy agreement and rent book and all that, and of course you have to be seen to be paying the shortfall.

I rented from my father and got housing benefit but he already owned the property and it was quite clear that he would be renting it anyway. The problem you have is that he is especially buying the property to rent out to you. I don't know if this will get you through the contrived tenancy interviews that you will both have to attend seperately, believe it or not they want to knwo that he is just as willing to kick you out and get another tenant in if you dont pay the rent.
good point goodsoulette...but i have never been asked how long my father has owned this house, so i doubt they will ask hiblingz

i have also never had to attend any sort of meeting about it..and neither has my dad....nor have i even been questioned.

i have claimed for short periods on an off for about 15 years, and probably filled the forms in about 10 times...

it may well be because although my dad is listed as my dad, he is also listed as a company too though
I always thought Benefits were there to help out people who were desperate. Your old man has made a thriving business out of the taxpayers paying for his houses.
I think most hard working taxpayers on this site think you are a con artist ( to put it nicely). You are that thick skinned you can't see it.
this gets funnier and funnier...

how do you work that out? how have you paid for my dads house??
be paid for those houses outright, in full, out of his own pocket...where do taxpayers money come into it?

he is a LANDLORD and he now rents them out to people to live in...or should he offer them free perhaps?
how they pay their rent is up to them...what has it to do with my dad?

i have no income at the moment and i am entitled to benefits until i find work...my dad is not expected to keep me...

did you actually read the post?
No, you didnt did you - you are just knee jerking?

if you must 'contribute' do try to make sense...you just sound stupid otherwise
Chris has given the correct answer as the first answer to this thread, then there's about 100 posts of people just slating Joko (which has NOTHING to do with the question).
Seriously, you may not like the situation, but ranting about it on a website isn't going to change it!
its her house and the taxpayers are paying the rent and she sees nothing wrong.
It's her Dads house.
The house is in his name please read her postings she has stated that it is her house.
Only in spirit...
How convenient, that way she gets her rent paid
yes...so its his house...it is mine only because i live in it!
i have no legal right to this house until it is willed to me when my mum dies.

it is my dads house and he is entitled to get rent for it!

still no-one has told me who i am conning... the law are perfectly happy with the situation...i have not lied, neither has my dad...i am entitled to benefit when i am unemployed...and he is entitled to charge rent for a house HE OWNS...

so seriously ...who exactly am i conning?

are you suggesting that i should never be entitled to any financial aid - no matter what my situatuion because in 10-15 years time i will be left a house in a will??
really??

Who he will his property to when he dies is no-ones business but his, and does not affect the persons life leading up to that point...

heres the situation...

I have a house (mine, but still in my dads name legally) that is large enough to be converted into 2 flats...the house needs repairs doing but its not feasible while i am still living in it.

i would like to move somewhere else...so need a mortgage...however as a freelancer who is relatively new to my field i dont have a regular enough income to be considered in normal crcumstances...
Please don't forget that if a member of a family charges rent for to another family member the person renting out the property will have to pay income tax on what they receive. Quite honestly renting a property from a member of the family is absolutely fine, no different from renting from anybody else. And why would a member of a family be expected to let a relative live in their house for nothing because they are 'family'. I don't. I can't afford to!!
Exactly Lottie and a point Joko made earlier was glossed over too, she only pays (or HB at times) a nominal £60 per week, depending on where in the country she is that figure if she moved to another privately rented property could more than double.
LHA where I am is £86.30 per week for a one bedroomed property but is of course much higher in other parts.
Just think Mamya that people should be aware of the facts before they start babbling on about tax payers supporting those that rent properties out to family. Each family has individual financial circumstances!

How convenient.
So it is legally her father's and do not forget Wills can be changed! Fact
Lot of envy on here I suspect. Joke is lucky that a house that she rents at present will someday be hers (most likely). Until such time she is paying rent. She is not sponging off her family. Her father will be paying income tax on all his rental income. Both her father and her would like to see the house converted into two flats which would mean she would have to move out whilst the work takes place. Between them they want to raise some capital to do this work. What is wrong with this situation!
As long as there is a legal rental agreement and the rental property is up to certain standards and there is proper insurance in place then it matters not whether you rent from your father or Jo Bloggs down the street.
Whatever i agree with the majority on here.
