On the TV,there are several ads for various charities, saying that they can help you make your will, for free.

Do they really do this, and is it really free?

Or do they expect a donation, and how are the wills witnessed.

Any information(I want to make a will)would be most helpful.

Yes, they are free.  They would like you to leave them a legacy but you are not obliged to do so.

Generally, you make an appointment at a participating solicitors.  They act in exactly the same way as if you are privately paying, but the charity pays the bill.

You will find that wills for complicated circumstances or those where tax planning is required are excluded.

Thank You Barmaid,

I have very little to leave to anyone, but I would like it to go someone of my choice.

I shall look into it,and report back.

We used this service.  Although we didn't include any charities in the wills, we did give a donation to charity. We weren't pressured to do this though.

I got mine free from this firm during one of the 'free wills month' promotion, but they only charge £100 if you do it through them at any other time.  You do it all online, they check it and then send it back to you to get it signed.  They will also keep it for you for £10 a year so they deal with everything if you don't have anyone else to deal with it.

if you do leave it with a solicitor, make sure everyone knows who and where.
