Morning,

I’ve lived in this house for about 4 years. The previous owners took all their belongings when they sold and moved out.

I was working in the loft a couple of weeks ago and found a substantial amount of money in old £20 notes hidden under the loft insulation.

Is this money legally mine? If so, what do I do with it

ha ha love the choice of user name, have we been conned again?
Dotty, if it was older people, oh yes they would. When granny died, the family found shedloads of money stashed away - down the back of the washbasin in the bathroom, under floorboards - anywhere, she didn't trust banks.
You don`t need to contact the police, they will contact you when you try to change it at the bank.
Why do I get the impression that this is a wind up. Elgar notes were issued in 1999 so they are max 21 years old. The only reason they could be forgotten about is if the owner who hid them is dead. That's my opinion.

is 1999 21 years ago? time flies when you're having fun, my grandson was born in 1999, he's only 11
I found load in OHs lock up :)
anyway, 'Lofty' had been sitting on these noyes for 2 weeks, that's indecisive in anyones book

We've recently moved but as the previous owners sold because of financial strife, I won't bother looking.
Sorry Dotty Typo, should read 11 years old.
If they are Elgar notes, maybe we are being strung along. I must remain composed over this.

Lofty needs to conduct her proper examination into this Enigma and see if there are any variations that need to be accounted for, so out of this she gets the necessary pomp and circumstances to got to the Bank, so that they serenade her and not dismiss it as some Dream of Gerontius.
very well composed DT : )
thank you dotty, someone who knows her Edward Elgar!

Everyone,

thanks for your replies - helpful and amusing.

This is definitely not a wind-up. I am the third owner of this house since 1999. I have spent the last couple of weeks wondering what to do.
Contact the police, contact the police, contact the police, contact the police
^^^^^^^^^^^^
I agree with Dotty.
How convenient you managed to look underneath your loft insulation, if you know what loft insulation is like, hopefully you would have been wearing gloves and protective clothing.
Edward Elgar notes were withdrawn from use some time last year. It is no long legal tender. You will probably have to take it to your bank and spin them the same tale. Trip Trap Trip.
Possible it could also be forged money (or even stolen or proceeds of crime) which is another variable and could make for a difficult situation if you try and pay it in anywhere!

Ok, it's a longshot it could be fake or say marked money from a bank robbery but, then again, what are the chances of you finging £30k left in your attic!
