Does anyone know to apply to become a proofreader? I saw an ad' for this on the 'net..."work from home etc..." but surely not anyone can do it? I am a voracious reader and would love to that but surely there is a catch?

you may be a voracious reader but you do really really have to know exact punctuation for that job. I used to do it a long time ago and it is very laborious unlike reading a book.
Yes I used to do it for local businesses but it's really not just like reading as Connemara says. In fact a lot of companies these days want you to be qualififed in it. There's a lot of work involved and it's quite time consuming
Ads are usually for a course that teach you proof reading
I suggest you apply to publishers. As you are a vocacious reader, how about reading aloud & recording on tape or CD for the blind or foreigners who want to hear the spoken word.

Try marketing your recordings in libraries or net sales.
I'm not sure to be honest where you are able to get such Job(s) that are legitimate and not just a scam - wanting money for sending you a document that needs proofreading editing if needed and sending back. Maybe try an agency? Sorry not to be of any help !
"... would love to that but surely ..."

Would love to that eh? I wouldn't bother if I were you.
With the excellent professional software for spell and grammar checking, the most demand for proof readers is highly specialised, such as law or medicine text books where the proof reader must have a good grasp of referencing and technical terminology.
