Hi

I am thinking of applying for an Teaching support post at my local college, but one of the criteria is that i need to be a member of the Institute for Learning. What does this mean exactly? Is anyone on here a member, do you think it is worth applying and saying i would be willing to study to become a member?

thanks

Like the General teaching Council (GTC), the IfL is a body that is intended to regulate the quality and professional behaviour of teachers / lecturers. So if you want to teach at college level, you have it to do.

Most app forms will ask if you are a member.
Do you want to be a support tutor or a subject tutor?
At the moment at my college, subject tutors have to join IFL but not support tutors. But support tutors may have to join in the future.

the job is basically looking after the Learning Centre at the college (learning centre is a library with a few computers for the students to use). My responsibilities are mainly admin based, but i will be training people how to use the computers and audio-visual equipment - i think this is where the IFL membership comes in. Would i be able to apply for the job and say on my application form that i would be willing to become a member of the IFL should I be succesful in my application? Thanks again people.
That seems reasonable to me. Good luck

notafish - thanks, and thanks lady as well. X
In time anyone who wants to teach at any sort of level (including Adult Education tutors) will have to register with the IfL. It is a very easy process and you are expected to keep a recors of Personal Development which the IfL may wish to see evidence of. The website is very good and easy to understand
