Does anyone know of any scriptwriting/screenwriting courses in the South West that aren't full-time university courses? Maybe a workshop that only lasts a few days? I can't find anything. :(

It might be worth contacting the University of Bath, to see what they can offer:

or the University of Bristol:

Hi Vulpine, try here: Courses are in London and Bournemouth, Commercial Road. Also other locations.

http://www.scriptsbymail.creators.co.uk

A variety of class based courses and also correspondence courses specifically in scriptwriting for film and television.

Taught by professional scriptwriters - one of whom has taught at the Arts Institute in Bournemouth as well as the National Film and Television School.

Hope it helps.

Have you got an idea you're working on?

Thanks sheelzee - correspondence courses are what I was actually looking for, since I live away from the big towns like Bournmouth and Bristol, et al. I've got a couple of ideas I'm working on, but I'm very much a novice having written only novels (prose) before. :)
Well you're half way there then if you've written before. Some people will tell you that scriptwriting is a talent only a few posess, but from my own experience I can tell you that it really isn't the 'Holy Grail' it seems.
If you've written before, you really just need the tools and a few pointers to start writing scripts. There are specifics but essentially, story telling is not that much different.

The place I mentioned does do a correspondence course (one of the writers is actually a BAFTA winner and has even written a feature film, but doesn't shout it about too much because you get goodness knows who sending scripts through.

While a few are okay, when you start receiving ten a day it can be a problem.

Anyway, I wish you all the best with your search.

If you require any further guidance please don't hesitate in contacting me. I'm happy to point you in the right direction.

Not sure if I can put my email up, but will anyway and if I'm not supposed to, a moderator can always take it off.

Best regards

Seems what you;re looking for is feedback, not merely a screenwriting course. The information on screenwriting is available to you on the web if you'll use it.

Story-telling in films varies from the way stories are told in novels. It is fundamentally a design problem - how do you assemble your story in the most compelling way. Dramatic writing restricts itself to cause and effect narrative.

My best advice is ABSOLUTELY NAIL your grasp of screenplay format. Amateurs aren't taken seriously. Know exactly how a professional screenplay looks and READS.
