While in college I was a sales clerk at a department store. I worked in Men's Accessories. A man with a heavy European accent was a frequent customer. One day he informed me he was taking the US citizenship test. I wished him well. A while later he left a message for me to call him at home. He had passed his test and wanted to know when I could help him find a suit, tie, etc. for the swearing in. I knew that we had caried some novelty ties at one time that were patriotic in nature. Of course we had none. I called the buyer and explained the situation. He sent me a choice of ties with flags and US colors for the man to choose. This man was so proud and touched by the ties that he wrote a letter to the headquarters about me. The buyer also felt that I had gone above and beyond my lowly duties and also wrote a letter about me. In a field where most people only write complaint letters, it was nice to acknowledged by both a customer and a superior. It was nice of this elderly man to share his experiences with me. Whenever I hear of someone becoming a citizen here, I am always reminded of that story.
