I have just finished a degree in fine art and have really strong drawing abilities but I can't get a job doing this anywhere. I am really eager to get an in-house position in a greetings card company but how could I get such a job as they are so few and far between?

First, stop thinking in terms of there are so few jobs and theyre so difficult to get by doing that, youre making it your reality. Then, start to envision yourself in the position you would like to be in, as though its already happened. And remind yourself why you should have this job youve completed your studies, you have excellent abilities, youre eager, youre willing, etc. Dont ask me why, but when you start from this position youre in with an excellent chance of reaching your goal. And keep reminding yourself of that goal, and imagining it already realised, as vividly as you can. Youre creating the situation first in your imagination the physical reality wont be far behind.

And then, of course, do everything you can to make useful contacts, scan trade journals, apply for positions all over the place, and pester people who you think may be able to help you. Get to know people, and get yourself known. And dont be shy to ask for help (people love to help out, it makes them feel important, and useful!).

Im sure you will be successful at finding the work you want, Zoe. Just be sure to start with using your imagination. In fact, why dont you start sketching yourself, doing the kind of work youd like to do, in the kind of environment youd like to work in, surrounded by the kind of people youd get on well with. Good practice, and great for building up a clear mental image.

Best of luck!

unfortunately, in this kind of industry, qualifications and being able to draw well are not enough.

you need experience. I would suggest getting work experience in some of these card companies, as much as possible, to learn the how these places work - and working to briefs and interpreting and guidelines and deadlines and work practices etc etc etc

good luck

also try googling a few design festivals called decorex and heimtex - it they are still going - these will give to details of house styles and who may be looking for juniors etc
Have you thought of trying to get work experience or an in-house design dept job with a publishing company? - even educational publishers have in-house designers and the work can be quite varied. It may be easier to find a position with a publishing house, get some work experience and build a portfolio of card designs in your spare time. One of our designers also sells her cards in our cafe.
