Depends how well thought of you are where you currently work. In other words, if you’re easily replaceable you’ll be up the creek without a paddle, so to speak.
in fact it is a matter of negotiation - like if the secretary hasnt actioned it - try to claw the letter back and so on ...
re employing someone who has resigned usually doesnt work ( things havent changed and they go on being dissatisfied )
if a group of you have been made redundant
re apply after about six weeks as that will allow the employer to work out who was really doing the work.....

Once you have handed your notice in they are under no obligation whatsoever to offer it back to you if you asked - as said they'd need to be really sorry to see you go for them to re-consider. What do you mean by new job fall through - you mean before you even started it?
You should not hand in your notice until you have a confirmed offer of a new job. A friend of mine handed his notice in ,with the words .
''St*ff your job, I'm off to Australia''
The job offer fell through and he had to come and ask for his old job back.
Unfortunately he was refused and found himself out of work ,due to his own fault.
well assuming you have not burnt any bridges eddie, (like the numskull you mention above) most employers will allow you to withdraw your notice but it's purely discretionary. There is a chap were I work who finally left a few months ago after resigning 3 times, the first 2 he changed his mind and they kept him on but they do not have to. So wax lyrical in your resignation letter and you may be ok but I don't really know how well thought of you are in your current position.
