Sorry the link doesn't work but it basically says that astronaut derives from the greek words for ''space sailor''
Cosmonauts was taken.
They're really "star sailors" from the Greek words 'astron' = star and 'nautes' = sailor.
They used to call them 'farmer' but people felt it was unsuited to their role (spaceflight as opposed to tilling the land, rockets not tractors, etc etc). You get me?
