Is there something missing from this equation ??
I'm presuming the equation is meant to be

x^2 + 4 = 0

In which case the answer rather depends on whether this is a GCSE-equivalent question or A-Level Further Maths equivalent.

If it's not further maths work then the answer is that there are no (real) roots.

If it's Further Maths or equivalent, then the answer is that the roots are a= 2 i and b=-2i where i is the square root of -1.

And if it's not meant to be x^2+4 =0 but x^3+4=0 then there are three roots, two of which will be complex and the third will be the cube root of -4.
Jim...you are a very clever boy...all double dutch to me !
You know, I looked at it, failed to see the missing bit, and thought ±2i immediately. Must be the way my brain works, fills out the bits that are not there but should be ! And I use to think I was so observant too :-(
