In 1942, Mrs. Fenner of Woodmansterne primary school,London,SW16, was a dedicated red-faced, loud-speaking, domineering, teacher of the 3R's in the top class of the school and we were all scared of her and did not dare misbehave.
One of the children sitting behind me asked me to explain a point he did not understand and as I was giving him the answer, she called me out to the front of the class for punishment.
She took a chalk-filled duster and tied it under my jaw and over my head and sent me down to the sit in the class for 6-year olds until playtime.
All the children thought this was hilarious, as blushing, I did as I was bidden.
I have always regretted that I did not think of going into the cloakroom/toilet to wait for the break time. Nobody would have known.
I was very grateful to her, however, as her teaching got me a place at St. Olave's Grammar school, near Tower Bridge.

ummm... great story but is there a question?
If you look at robert's other threads you'll see he writes interesting stories /reminiscences rather than questions. They are always well-written and sound to me like something I used to read in Readers Digest

Just kiddin robert :)
I agree, a teacher can be the making of some children
I was caned at school for laughing. I should maybe go to school now, not much to laugh at when your 64.
We used to have a teacher who I think specialised in humiliating punishments.

I laugh at all the doddery 64 year olds (I'm 63)
Wharton ..I am turning into one of the forgetful, slow old women I used to complain about. I'm 65 next week so will be even worse.
One thing about children today is they do know their rights. I was a shy compliant type of child but was unjustly punished a few times. I should have refused the punishment. The idea of arm round the shoulder encouragement was unknown.
i was wacked in 1965. Somehow I got over it but I always hated the bar steward that did it. He's dead now !
Did you have to stand up if you got a times tables question wrong? Stand on your seat if you were wrong again? Third time stand on your desk? Now absolutely terrified of heights.
