When should a student sign on for benefit if they are finishing college at end of May. The student has been offered a job commencing September but can they claim for the months up to that date.

To claim Jobseekers you have to be actively seeking employment; this means he/she would have to apply for jobs between now and September; even though he/she has something lined up. The alternative is to apply for a crisis loan though not sure how this is done.
How old will they be? And will anyone still be in receipt of child benefit?
Try straight away- there's nothing to lose. The Job Centre will advise him of any entitlements. If he lives at home with parent he may get very little
They can apply to agencies for temp jobs, get him to apply for jsa now.
i wouldnt mention the upcoming job. less hassle.
No i wouoldnt mention the upcoming either, just keep it simple eg you need a job
*wouldn't
So are we encouraging the student to get a temporary job, or to just find a way for him/her to get benefits?
both and neither craft - we are just answering the questin - porkchop will do whichever they choose, not for us to encourage them either way.
the benefit is there available for them...its not that easy to find work just after college, let alone a temporary one.

its only for 3 months not like a lifestyle choice
