Bank closed my bank acount

Hi i had a bank account with Halifax and i went over drawn by �60. I completely forgot about this account until recently so phoned them up giving account details. I explained i hadn't heard anything from them and wondered how i went about paying the �60. They told me there was no record of the account so it must have been closed, surely they should have informed me of this? and what happens about the �60 the lady i spoke to couldn't find anything?
