How does one go about getting licence to do hair in America? if you're from the UK does an NVQ count?

Dear Blonde.

Being a US citizen, I can take a guess, maybe someone else can be more specific...I would start by asking where in the US youd like to start..Im sure a licence like that would be regulated on a state level and each state would probably be different..so look up regulatory agencies in your states white pages and start there... just ask your exact question.  Then you need to ask yourself do you want to work for a salon or for yourself.. If your self employed make sure you check out tax requirements by the IRS... wish i could be more help... good luck.

You have to have a cosmetology license to be a professional hairdresser/stylist in the US.  Each state has slightly different requirements, here's a breakdown of each state:

Your NVQ could help you skip the step of going through cosmetology school and just taking the licensing exam in whatever state you choose to work in.
