Hi 15goddess15.

I suppose in answering the question you need to define what you mean by "religion"? As history has taught us it's very difficult for several religions to co-exist as the inevitable question is raised - which one's right? Judaism, Islam, Christianity, Catholicism? They would end up fighting it out, and it would just end up in tribal violence not unlike what we see in Northern Ireland between the Catholics and the Protestants. So in that respect, no, I don't think an increase in religion would be a good thing.

Perhaps however you were purely referring to Christianity, the dominant religion in the UK (71% according to the 2001 census). It doesn't make much of a difference to my answer - it's still no. I don't think religion would help anything.

It is a common assumption that religion provides us with a moral code of conduct. For one this assumes that without religion, a person would act in a bad way, or immorally. Why would they? Let's say Joe Bloggs is a Christian. Is the only reason he doesn't rape and pillage is because he fears god? Are you telling me that if it weren't for your belief in god, you'd kill your neighbor? I certainly hope not! Let's also not forget religion (and I'm still referring to Christianity with that word) is peppered with immorality. The Bible is full of examples of humans acting in the most heinous of ways. We have picked what we do like in the Bible and put those morals up on a pedestal and said, "Hey, look what religion has given us." Simultaneously the rotting and appalling behaviour is hidden away and never referenced. The fact is, our ability to have picked the good stuff from the bad in the BIble means morality must be innate in most of us anyway - so religion is unnecessary.

I can think of no atheistic nations to which I could refer which are better off for being largely atheistic. However, religion cannot point to a country and say, "Hey, they are all
Religion fosters and promotes the value of faith.

Think for a moment what faith is.

It is not questioning, not doubting but accepting what is handed down by peers or authorities as true.

It's basically intellectual surrender.

I think the Talliban are really rather into it
