I think you are trying too hard. Just go get to know her the same as you would were you approaching a boy you didn't know to see if he was suitable to form a friendship with. It's not different a small talk situation: maybe the subject areas might differ, even if they overlap.

Anyway you'll eventually learn that you don't need to talk (much), you need to look as if you are paying attention whilst you are talked at :-)
