I have booked to take my son on holiday beginning of September as I can't afford to do it in the summer holidays. I have never taken him out school before, my ex sister-in-law has informed me that they start doing they assessments 2wards there GCSEs. O u think he will miss much in those 2 weeks. I'm worried I may be easing up his education :/

Mosiac - I could never have lasted 30 years! (thank you for the dip in the treat bag, feel much better now!)
SD - we never do stuff for ourselves and wouldn't dream of dragging them to some adult-type holiday. The place we went to this year would have had us screaming per-kids, but they had a brilliant time and that was the whole point.
Well I`ll agree there Dave...I`ve never been on a grown up holiday...that will surprise no-one. :-)
Exactly right Kizzy - I wish that everyone had your attitude

Gness - I will send you the link to "botox to Alton Towers" that I mentioned a while ago - I think would enjoy many of the attractions :+)
Don't you just love the sweary word filter ....
Thank you.x
As an ex-teacher I would have loved to take my children on a cheaper holiday out of term time. Not an option. I do understand how difficult it is for some families. Blame the travel industry rather than education. In the past where I taught children were taken out of school for holidays and benefitted by them. One or two weeks a year equals time off for an illness.

For gness and evetyone who loves oddball days out - lovely book
I would never take my son out of school for a holiday (or any other reason apart from illness (his) or death in the family). He has 3 years of 100% attendance and it showed in his very good year 10 exam results that he picked up last week.
Meme. Have the holiday and have a fantastic time! Give your son two weeks to remember..........it`ll be worth much more than two weeks in school in September. x
learning is never 'one size fits all'.
This is what the techno revolution of the noughties failed to deliver.
We go to France every June for 3 weeks but now our grandson has come to live with us I have checked on the price of holidays in July for next year. Three weeks in June will cost £1,079.00. Three weeks in July at the same place in the same accommodation will cost £2,285.00. Looks like none of us will be going away next year.
Daffy, I was expected to turn up and teach the day after my father died. Also expected to organise the funeral for Saturday.
Daisy - you were very badly treated. For a long long time the teaching unions ensured compassionate leave was available for close relatives. I am appaleed that you were failed by duplicitous mangers.
Thank you Dave...oddball days out are so me!

Daffy...I`m glad your son has good results....but children whose mums take them out of school to climb mountains, milk cows, fossil hunt and ride horses in Canada do pretty well too. :-)
SD - one of the places mentioned in the book is Bekenscot. When we lived in Ayelsbury we had a season ticket - it was brilliant. Wish we lived nearer now as thing 2 would love it. Also went to the Pitt Rivers museum quite a few times, have been to Eden Ostrich world, the pencil museum and Avebury stone circle.
Avebury! Oh man....awesome.
I need to go to Callinish to complete my gyre.
NO NO NO! Bakers Dozen. Those holidays are days you will never get back! For god`s sake take them! Your grandson has a lifetime to learn.

My daughter was still at school when OH took ill and holidays were no more. The memories of the ones we had became more precious. What if we had waited til she left school?
Gness - he's 16 and starts college next week so I think it is important for the next two years that he doesn't miss college. He's been to France with us every year since he was two years old. Had no problem taking him out of school each June as he is a bright lad and got more benefit from the holiday. Just posted that to show the awful rise in prices for a holiday 4 weeks later. Same company, same accom, same travel yet more than double the price.
Last year we went on holiday in the proper holidays for more than it cost to go this year for two weeks in term time. They can fine me £60 a child if they want but it still makes financial sense to go in term time. We have already had letters from the primary school in July this year to say they were clamping down on term time holidays.
