As an employer is it better to fire someone, allow them to resign or mutually agree an end to a 6 month contract if I do not want to hinder them receiving unemployment benefits?

You're the boss ... if they need firing, do it ...

If they resign they may not get a bean from he Benefits because they made themselves unemployed ... a mutual ending would be the most amicable conclusion I think
If an employee makes themselves unemployed by resigning, they are generally debarred from claiming JobSeekers Allowance for 13 weeks.
