Something not very nice.
6 - 8 points will be put on your license - and you will get a hefty fine.
The hefty fine Ethel mentions is recommended at category B which equates to a weeks take home pay.

They could charge you with driving without due care for overtaking on the inside but I'd guess they'll probably settle for the lack of insurance
However upleasant what they do to you is, it's not as unpleasant as it should be. There really is no excuse for driving without insurance - and it's especially stupid if you're going to do something illegal in sight of a police officer.

Come clean with them and face your responsibilities.
You may get a fixed penalty which would be 200 and 6 points.
It's definitely a worrying statistic - the amount of similar questions on here about driving with no insurance - and a frightening insight into some so called "drivers" apathy to the holding of a valid insurance certificate and the complete ignorance that surrounds these questions.

When will people learn that driving a car is a responsibility and not just a case of getting in and getting from A to B.

I wonder if they would be as understanding if someone hit their cars or property with no insurance and no way of paying for the damage.

Rant Over
Could not have said anything better

It was an unmarked police car, and its definitly not a maneuver I practise regularly. My weeks take home pay is approx 250 before tax. I know its a stupid thing to do but before you rant about it look at it from my perspective, do I pay 2700 per year for the insurance (9 times what I actually paid for the car) or do I drive running the risk of being caught. I cant afford the insurance yet I need a car for my job, its a catch 22 situation, which is becoming all to common for young people like myself. Do I continue pouring money down the drain by renting out a house or where do I live while I try to save money for a deposit for a house? Its easy to pass judgement when your in a nice secure environment. No wonder suicide rates are rising in young adults.

Just as a passing note, ive been driving for over 3 years with not one single accident, bump or scrape (Have been insured as a second driver for most of this time.)

Apologies, my rant over.

Thank you for the answers, any experience from someone who has been in the same situation would be helpful.
I really am quite angry now. You cannot afford to drive - it is as simple as that.

A car is not a right - it is a luxury. Either get public transport to work, change jobs or move nearer to your job.

The day you involve somebody else in an accident will change your outlook. I don't care how good a driver you are - and with three years driving on the public roads you are still a novice - you don't know what's round the corner.

My next door neighbour travels 5 hours a day on public transport to get to his job and back- he is saving for a house.
I used to walk over three miles each way to work - all year round. As did a lot of other people.

And if you are actually using your car for your job - then you should be getting allowances for that.

Why do you think the law doesn't apply to you?

Question Author
Unfortunately walking to work isnt an option, my job requires me to be at anything between 3 to 12 locations per day, sometimes for 15 mins per area, sometimes 5 hours per area. Public transport wont cut it either. I start work at 8.30 and finish around 6.30. For me a car is a necessity. Moving nearer to my job is also out as the location varies so much. Getting a new job is out as I enjoy my job, its better paid than anything I can find and im not going to give it up for anything.

3 years on the road and im still a novice? can I ask how many accidents youve had in your past 3 years of driving?

You say your getting annoyed, im annoyed too at the fact you are probably sitting in a nice detached house, driving(badly) an expensive and powerful car and paying ridiculously cheap insurance for it.

A car is not a right - its a luxury, ok... food is not a right, its also a luxury. Sleep is not a right, its a luxury... Life is not a right, its a luxury.

I know the law, its not that I think it doesnt apply to me, I know I cant obey it without sacrificing part of my life, I dont see why I have to make that sacrifice while people like you float through the easy life. Im living for myself, I want to enjoy my time on the planet, not try to please people like you.

Oh yeah and just to **** you off even more, I wear a hat and do drive around with music playing loud. There you are, am I your perfect stereotype now?!?!
You're right - it is very easy to pass judgement. I've been a young driver, struggled with a full time job and two part time jobs - working 7 days a week. Pay all my car related bills on time and never let anything lapse. I've always driven fully insured, taxed and with a full license - I was raised to beleiev that this is called RESPONSIBILITY. The people who do pay their premiums on average pay about 30-50 a year for the uninsured driver.

As for the suicide rate - I thought we were talking car insurance ?

Take a step back - ask yourself if you could afford to be sued for tens of thousands of pounds if you were held responsible for an accident ? As for the premium of 2700 - buy a car that's cheaper to insure - as Ethel says its as plain as the nose on your face that you cannot afford a car.

Get off the road or get fully insured and legal.
Just wondering what job you do and if your employers know that you aren't insured. If they do they they are as irresponsible as you are; if they don't then when you are involved in an accident, as you probably will given your ''don't give a damn attitude'', then you will hopefully lose your job. Rant not over - I just can't be bothered to spend more of my time with a complete idiot as yourself.
Oh dear I think you have issues !!

If your car is such a large part of your job - then surely there could be a company car option - you need to approcah your employers and see if something could be worked out. Be candid with them and tell them what a pickle you are in.

Otherwise they should be paying you better and including travel expenses. They must pay something towards your petrol. They must see that the extra driving is having an effect on your insurance premium and should contribute accordingly.

Don't be angry on here when people get annoyed at such stupidity. Everyone has their own ways of giving advice and their opinion. You could learn some very valuable lessons from what people have said on here - so try not to bite the hand that feeds and take everything so literally.

Your comments on living in detached houses etc are puerile and innappropriate - there are people on here who have worked all their lives and pay their bills but I for one know what it's like to struggle on low pay and try to afford to run a car. Why if someone has a high performance car do you assume they drive badly? I pay for "good" insurance - not particularly the cheapest and for the record have no points on my license and have had no accidents and have been driving 20 years - 6 years of that as a courier covering 80k+ miles a year.

All we are saying is that there are ways to do things and there is a fundemental part of what you are doing that is just plain wrong.

These things have a habit of haunting you for quite a while - it's not the inconvenience of points and fines - it's the increase in insurance premiums and the knock on effect it has.

Always take away from a situation something you can learn from - I think with a little communication with your employer - you can come out of this in a much more appropriate, beneficial and professional working position.
Just wanted to add - what happens to all those low wage, hardworking people who scrimp and save to run a car - only to be left without one because a non-insured driver crashes into them ( I wont even go into the problems caused if you are seriously injured by an uninsured driver and want compensation) ?

Also if you are concerned about how much your insurance SHOULD be costing you at the moment - wait until you have points on your licence for driving with no insurance!!! Insurance companies will really love you then - the words 'bargepole' and 'wouldnt touch him with' come to mind!!!

I dont think you have any argument whatsoever!
If your insurance is 2700 with 3 years no claims and a clean licence then i suggest you buy a smaller car.
If you cant afford this and think its OK to break the law just so you can get to work then perhaps a moped will mean you can afford to insure yourself.
Unbelievable - you have such a nerve coming on here and bragging about having no insurance! Undertaking as well - tut tut - did you not remember anything from the highway code?
Too bad if you can't afford it - use public transport,a bike or walk.
I fork out my insurance and I am a lowly paid NHS worker - it just makes me so angry to know that uninsured 'drivers' think it's ok to take the p**s out of folk who scrimp & save to make sure they are lawful.
Hope you get what's coming to you
you and your type deserve a serious slap
better than watching tv reading this lot! although no real help to ohnonotagain! i was hoping somebody somewhere on here would actually know a good excuse to get a lesser penalty for driving with no insurance,as my GENUINE REASON isnt looking good. i passed my test at 17,i am now 33,never had a bump,no points, always fully comp-and protected them as soon as i was allowed to (just in case), and then the day i use car A,(thinking,as it states on my insurance certificate for car B- "insured to drive any other car not belonging to me") it doesnt state that car A has to be insured? my insurance for car B costs me around 500 every year,iv had it 10years, car A probably wouldnt even cost half that. one of you said the it is a category B fine (equal to a weeks pay)-im on 1 benefit only and i pay more out than comes in by far. yes, funds are nearly all gone. but luckily still have a roof above my head. if there is anyone who genuinely does have any help apart from rants, please read my question,oh and answer it! thank you.
