Imagine you take out short term travel insurance to cover the dates you are away.

If you are delayed returning home by a day or so, perhaps ATC strikes,  aircraft technical problems or an Icelandic volcanic cloud, are you not insured once you have exceeded your planned return date?

You make a good point that I hadn't considered.

Travel insurance policies expect you to claim comensation for delayed flights from the airline but if you are stuck abroad after your planned return and have a medical emergency, or have a loss or theft are you still covered?

I will follow this thread with interest

I've just seen this but don't know if it applies to all insurance companies.

I suspect this is the difference between "good" and "cheap" insurance policies. Lots of people buy on price and are outraged when something isn't covered when it happens to them. Companies with good reviews for customer service are rarely the cheapest.

^Completely agree bhg...I'm with LV (who are the top-ranked insurance company by Which?) and they always seem to play fair. My motor premium went down for two consecutive years (by a total of over 20%)...this year it has gone up, but not by nearly as much as I was expecting.

I tend to add an extra day or two on to the insurance just in case. I was asking to see if I was wasting my money.

I suppose I could always read the small print, but .....

Can you give them a ring and ask, Hoppy?

Not necessary. I have the insurance with an extra day added. It just set me thinking.
