You inform your insurance company of the change of vehicle and the premium may be adjusted - you may have to pay more or there may be a rebate (less admin charges of around £25).
It's no hassle unless you also change insurers. You will have to pay any extra obviously, maybe a small admin charge, but I did it earlier this year going from an M reg astra to a more modern car and paid about £30 extra
We pay insurance annually and I switched cars before the renewal was up. They just took the new car details over the phone and charged £15 admin.

thanks for your answer, if the insurance company wanted to charge an above average price for an alternate car could i cancel and then re-insure with someone else and get my money back?
Yes, you will, for the remaining period, but minus a charge for admin.
youll probably find that by cancelling youll incurr more charges and itll be cheaper to stick with current insurer until the year end
and nthen shop around, get the lowest deal, then go to your existing insurer with the new quite and barter them down abit more
