What is the best type of paint to use on fibre-glass?   Will ordinary gloss paint from a DIY store do?

Some gloss paints will work OK but you need to be careful what solvents they have in them. Some of the older types of gloss will etch into the fibreglass and delaminate it.

I'm no expert in it but perhaps a water-based gloss would be worth a try.
