In the US, there are Mortuary Technician Colleges that graduate students in about 24 months.  They are highly in demand, since people are dying for their services (sorry).  As most go on to own their own service, they are quite well paid.  However, a recent survey of several modes of employment found that morticians and dentists had the highest rate of alcoholism among the proffesions for some reason.  Some funeral services do hire unschooled apprentices.  You would have to check the requirements for the UK... Luck! (I think...)
someone told me its a dead good job, but its a dying trade.
You know nothing about the requirements or the wages but you wanna be an undertaker. You must really want to be around dead people, on that criteria I wouldn't hire you.

Thanks. It was just somthing we were talking about at work a few nights ago, and undertaker was one of the jobs mentioned that none of knew anything about. So I was volenteered to find out. Just shows how boring a night shift can be!

I would imagine it would be a dead good job & one for life!

Years ago, most undertakers were former joiners (for obvious reasons). I expect now, though, that coffins are chosen from a wholesaler's catalogue, rather than knocked up in the back of the shop!
