I have managed to make a simple web site on one of these ''easy to make'' sites and after being published for about 2 weeks to my amazement I found it listed on Google albeit on about page 27 of the listings, my question is how did it get on there? and now that it is how can I get it nearer to the top of the listings without having to pay a fortune to some type of agency ?

Google and other search engines regulalry trawl the net indexing new websites.
To get it higher, you will need lots of references to the subject matter that people will search on. Also many links from other sites pointing back to your website will increase its ranking.
There's a clue in the term: SEARCH engines. They search, therefore they find.
"how can I get it nearer to the top of the listings"
That will depend on what's on your site, which search terms you want to optimise it for, how relevant the search terms are to you site content, etc.

You say you found it on page 27, but you don't say what you typed into Google in order to find it. It's not enough to get your site on the first page, you have to guess what people are likely to search for and and get it on the top page for those search terms. For example, typing "Kefalonia" into you tube will not find any of my stuff in the top 10 pages, nor will typing "Tutti Frutti". But type "Tutti Frutti Kefalonia" and the first 9 results are all mine.
"typing "Kefalonia" into you tube " Oops! Should have read "typing "Kefalonia" into Google"!

Thanks for your answers, but how do I get ''links from other web sites pointing back to mine'' sorry to be so dim but i am new to all this..
You need to find other websites that deal with a similar subject matter and contact them. Most websites have a "similar sites" or link page. If you swap links with someone, you both increase your chances of getting better results.
