wash my turkey ! - I was watching a programme last night that said you should'nt wash your turkey just put it in the oven. I think its because of bacteria etc etc.

I always wash meat before cooking. What does anyone else do ?

This was asked in F&D yesterday (or the day before- forgotten which now) and the general consensus was that whilst we now know you're not suuposed to wash your turkey (thank you weird advert on TV) we all still do.
I never wash meat.
Just waiting for some comments from vibra or snags on that now ;-) ^^^^^^
We're told at work not to wash raw meat as it can splash bacteria around and then this can increase the risk of spreading the bacteria to other surfaces etc.

If it's going in the oven all bacteria should be killed off anyway, so long as it's being cooked correctly :o)
I considered making a comment on it daffy :)

Well, I am 86,and Elsie my wife tells me she never washes meat (turkey and Chicken included) and we have both never had any type of food poisoning,so she must be doing something right!
I agree with Wingnut,if it's cooked properly,at the correct temperature ,all the bacteria will be killed off anyway.

I know in theory all germs should be killed whilst cooking - only recently I have stopped washing turkey mince and put it straight in the pan, but I always wash everything - I disinfect all my chopping boards, knives etc when preparing meat.
I never wash red meat, but whole chicken, and in this case turkeys I do. Especially the cavity, seen the gunk that's in there?

Shudder.

I agree B00 - inside the cavity is all sorts yuk yuk - you can see that when you buy a cooked chicken from Tesco I think they even leave the neck in.
