I just bought a new house with a new security system installed and i want to learn more about how it works. My specific question is How do the police know that my alarm has been tripped?

The alarm system at my old house had a dial-up facility which connected to a 24/7 monitoring control room. They would phone the police when the alarm was activated. It was very effective even though it was my fault when it went off. The police were round within 15 mins. Is your alarm under a support /monitoring agreement and is it able to connect to your phone line? If you don't know, try asking the previous owners.
