hi, our main waste stack (connects the loo/sink upstairs, then drops down to ground level where the washing machine and kitchen sink connect) it where it connect here that it's started to leak at the join in the large stack pipe, if this needs replacing (the whole) or part of the bottom joints what would the cost be? Just so i have an idea. TIA

Hello, if it has 'just started' to leak it could indicate a blockage further on in the system. Initially, I would try a drain unblocker chemical such as "Drain Magic" that you can get from good hardware stores. It's about 4 and you have to use it really carefully as it is very acidic. If you still get a leak after that and everything appears to be draining away then the joint needs looking at - it may simply need resealing. It is difficult to say what the cost of replacing the joints would be - take a picture and measurements to your local plumbers/builders merchants (if you have one) and they should be able to tell the price(s). Or have a look at screwfix.co.uk. Hope this helps, Andy
Well you can try what ACB suggests but frankly these sort of pipes are supposed to be able to withhold a positive AIR pressure in the pipe (if tested). If it doesn't stop water coming out, it clearly isn't going prevent stink air getting out.
Are we talking cast iron (old style) pipes on the OUTSIDE of the property (as fitted until about the 1960s) or are we talking UPVC plastic pipes that are typically on the inside of the property. It makes a heck of the load of difference because cast iron is obsolescent, relatively expensive and difficult to work with.
If it's a clay pipe and it's leaking at the joints, scrape out the old sealant and replace it with silicone - should do the trick.

Outside plastic soil waste pipe......
never ever use those expensive drain unblockers!! If you need to unblock a drain then soda crystals are best. But agree with everything else go to local pipe merchants and ask or if you dont want to get involved go through your building insurance
The multi-armed joints in 110mm bore are around 35 each. The 110mm pipe isn't very costly.
Depends who'se doing the job - I'll have thought you could have found someone to do the job for 100 in total - unless you live in London.
