How to engrave a message on a stone

Hi - I'd like to get a message engraved on a pebble or stone. What's the best way to go about this? Could I do this myself? If not can anyone recommend someone in the Midlands who would be able to do it for me, and not charge a fortune. Thanks very much everyone.

well I can't figure out what sort of scale you want?

Message implies something long...

Stone or pebble implies something small

If you want a long message on a small pebble it is gonna be tricky...

A short message on a large stone will be a lot easier and cheaper!

Fair point. We haven't made our minds up yet. I think it was a question of finding out what could be done and then supplying an appropriate pebble or stone to fit. But really I just want to know how it's done. Sorry to confuse.

There are many (garden) stone engravers on the internet, I found loads by searching for engraved + garden + stones, but I don't live in the UK so it would probably be better if you performed that search yourself and added the name of your town/area. Should you not come up with anything you could always call somebody who engraves headstones (ask at a funeral home) and ask them who to turn to, if it's not their department they might still know who to direct you to.

key shops have tools for engraving dog disks etc - try them.

Our local stone yard uses laser engravers and can work on any size. http://www.pooilvaaish.com/?page_id=222 I appreciate the link is probably no use to you but the system is called laser etching which might helpp you with your seach or might even be worth contacting them.
