Email/phone/mail entries for tv comps

How do tv companies collate all entries for their tv comps and choose a winner. Are email entries treated the same as phone entries , if so why do people waste money phoning in an answer when an email is free. How are postal entries entered into the system with phone and email ?

What's the first letter of the alphabet? Is it:

Call or text us with your answer. Calls will cost 1 from a BT line, more from mobiles. texts will cost 1 plus your standard charge for texts.

Then we'll continue taking your calls, and money, after the time limit, but you won't be entered. (Although we could just shut the lines down then you wouldn't be charged).

Then we'll give away a prize that we've been given at little or no cost to us and trouser all your cash.

Why on earth does anybody enter these things?
