Why are air mail envelopes blue?

maybe it's becasue air is blue... from the ground view. it's just my guess..

They are carried in the holds of airplanes, and get very cold.

That'll be two "don't knows" then... Anyone have any sensible suggestions?

When I was a lad the Air mail letter boxes were blue. There is still one round the corner from me outside Windsor Castle.

It was to make sorting easier, in the days before postcodes.
