How it Works

Play Station 2 not playing standard DVD movies

H all, my son has a PS2 (new about 3 years ago) he enjoys playing games and of course watching movie DVD's - the problem is we have a problem that the machine won't play some if not all of his movies (they've all been played at one time and been perfect) so don't understand why it's stopped playing movies. Simply when we load a disk it doesn't seem to 'spin' properly and you can hear a whirling/spinning noise when it is going to actally work??? any ideas, eg he watched Ice age 2 on it today, removed the disk to play a game, came back a few hours later to watch Ice age again and it wouldn't work?? BTw all his movies are original's not copies etc - all replies grateful xx

It could be that the disc drive is on the way out, my PS2 lasted about 4 years before it packed up. If it's still playing game discs then it should still play the DVDs

Try running a lens cleaner through it, it could just be dusty, then try Ice Age and some other films to see if it's just Ice Age playing up or the drive.

Hi Cakeboy - blimey that was a quick reply, yes good idea about the lens cleaner, just weird that it never plays up with games but only the movies??? last night he wanted to watch a movie and i tried all 10 films he's got and not one would play, yet earlier that day i just tried Ice Age and it worked??

Mine lasted about 6 months before this happened - seems it's a very common fault with the PS2.

(Google "playstation 2 won't play dvds" - huge number of listings)

this will sound a litle odd but have you tried playing it with the ps2 either on its side or even upside down?

it has something to do with the laser to disc distance.my ps1 and later my ps2 both suffered this problem but playing upside down worked a treat!

let me know how you get on.
