On trying to open the bonnet, using the lever in the car, it appears to pop open, but when going to the front of the car to release the secondary catch under the bonnet to actually open it all the way, it refuses to budge so I cannot open it at all Things now getting dire - any advice or help on how to release the catch, and open the bonnet - sorry don't know correct terminology for things, but hopefully you will understand the problem

Usual trick if it is not opening needs 2 people. One pulls the release, while one bumps up and down with their hands on the front of the bonnet (if you see what I mean) to vibrate the catch open. But by the sound of your question, its opened to 'first stage' and you can't move the second clip. Apart from trying to lever it with ascrewdriver or similar, could be a trip to the garage.
