13 months ago (just out of guarantee, natch) I bought an expensive freestanding uplighter, with one of those black box things on with a foot slider control. The other day, it went off completely, so I changed the bulbs. Still not working. The indicator light is still illuminated on the fott slider, so don't think it's the fuse? What can I do? Please help if you can.

I would have a guess the bulb blowing has taken out the foot slider ie. blown it.
At the instant a bulb blows the filament breaks and can cause and arc between the two ends of filament which pulls a heavy current - normally in a good bulb there is an internal fuse which protects the wiring from the excessive current but in the case of cheap bulbs it doesn't - as consequently happened to me tonite on one of mine.
Take it to an electrician and get it checked out.
It is a good idea also to get the fuse on the plug as closely matched to the lamp wattage as possible - by this I mean not having a 100w lamp protected a 13amp fuse i the plug.

Had 2 x 25w bulbs in uplighter - what fuse should I use in plug please?

Preferabbly a 2 amp or a 3 amp max. ( 2 amp fuses can be a bit hard to get sometimes)
If the bulb of mine that blew had been in a table lamp it would have knocked the 2amp fuse that I fit to all my table lamps before it blew the cartridge fuse fitted in the meter board.
A 2 amp will cover up to 400w approx.
We had one of these, and exactly the same thing happened. I just chopped off the slider and attached the plug to the remaining cable. Obviously we no longer had a dimmer control, but at least the lamp worked.
