I've found something online which helps me work out my finger size - I've found out the circumference of my finger is 42mm (4.2cm). how do i turn this into the diameter that will give me the correct size?

i wish i'd paid more attention in algebra!

Circumfrence divided by pie = Diameter
4.2 divided by 3.141592654... = 1.36901522cm

Diameter = 1.4cm (1dp)
42mm / pi = 13.369mm... or size D

Unfortunately the error in calculation by cheater123 would equate to a larger ring size of E and rounding up would give a size of F.

Good job I'm still at school!!!
You dont need to work out the circumference of your finger to buy a ring online - they'll send you a template with holes to push your finger through which will tell you the correct size.
here is a site you can measure ring size quickly at home : http://findmyringsize.com
