I need to clean my leather car seats, and have been told that these leather wipes / tubs of leather treatment are just expensive and a waste of time. Someone told me neat washing up liquid or baby wipes are just as good - but I'm a bit worried about ruining the leather. Any ideas ?

Use the correct leather treatment.

Go to an equestrian shop, they have loads of great leather cleaning products such as Saddle Soap.
Detergent and water is fine. No need to buy expensive products. You don't (or shouldn't) buy expensive products to wash your hands with, and leather is just skin after all!
detergent will dry the leather out over time - Tourman is right, use proper leather cleaner
Absolute rubbish! I have a leather sofa and use mild detergent and water and it's perfectly fine. I have had it for 12 years! I use a leather wax once per year to condition the leather but you can clean it with detergent, no problem.
