Clematis Montana grows quickly once it's established as do a couple of the early varieties which have little pink and blue petals (sorry but I don't know their names). Am not aware of any varieties which are evergreen. Use the biggest size pot possible as their roots can grow quite deeply. Gardening advice suggests that the roots should be protected in shade - not always easy if you're using a container up against a wall but ensure the surface soil is kept well mulches.

As mentioned, Clematis montana rubens (pink variety) or alba (white) are very quick growing and i would say pretty unsuitable for tubs due to their very fast growing habit.

There are a few evergreen varieties.....C. Armandii (scented too) and C. Cirrhosa.

You will need the biggest pot possible.....even half a barrel. The roots like to be kept cool so bear this in mind. Keep well watered in summer and feed weekly with phosphagen, miracle grow or even a tomato food.

I agree with the above posts that c. montana is by far the most vigorous grower but alas not evergreen and not very attractive in the autumn/winter.

Armandi has huge evergreen leaves and small but plentyful white flowers, it is only just hardy but well worth a try if you have a sheltered site.

Its well to remember that clematis are woodland plants and prefer dappled shade with a cool root run, which can be aided with a rock placed on the soil near the roots..
