Have heard if anybody buys a car from a salesroom and pays via their DLA that person does not have to pay insurance nor tax

If you buy a motability car the monthly payment includes tax and insurance so you don't have to pay extra for them.

You don't buy the car, you lease it.  Insurance included

People who are entitled to a Motability car have zero rate tax on any car, bought from Joe Bloggs or leased from Motability

It depends on your arrangement, some give you the opportunity to purchase at the end of your lease

It's a good thing - you will always have a new/nearly new car. To qualify you need to be in receipt of the higher mobility award of PIP/DLA. You can opt to use this to lease a motability car.

You can no longer purchase a Motability car after the 3 year lease unless you bid for it at the car auction

So after 3 years is up DLA goes back to disabled person is that right

After three years the car goes back and you can lease another new car if you want

You ( one) does it thro Motability - you select one of the cars on offer and pay a down payment - I paid £1000 but there are others cheaper

then they insure you thro Direct Line

and you sort of get in and drive it around. ( I have someone to drive me) - and it is paid for out  of DLA ( high rate ) soo you get less DLA

and in three years you repeat the cycle

This is a very good deal

You have to work out if it's a good deal for you, it costs around £3700 a year to lease the car.

Not all cars need a deposit, but most do.

Anyone with a Motability vehicle has the option of extending the lease by 2 years. This might be because a suitable vehicle might not be available at the end of the lease.

Not strictly related but I think this system is very open to abuse. A friend had a motability car for several years - he didn't need it (but he got the doctor's note) and could easily afford not to have it (his wife had 2 cars at the time). He lost it when the rules were tightened a few years ago.

A neighbour couple of mine have a motability car. He is perfectly fit but she is completely housebound & never goes outside (except by ambulance). How do they qualify?

It's qualifying for the DLA or PIP that counts - what they do with the higher rate mobility allowance is up to them.  With your housebound neighbour she must be under pension age or qualified before she reached pension age.  I'm interested to know how you know the car is leased from Motability.

It can be cheaper to lease a car outside the Motability scheme, everyone needs to shop around before making that decision.

With mobility you don't get a free car, you get a higher rate allowance which you can take as a monthly top up on your pip or use it to privately buy or lease a vehicle. If you decide to go down the mobility route the company give you a car and dependant which car you choose they take up to all your mobility payment so you never see the money but you are still 'paying' for it.

I know of two people who had their motability car taken from them because they didn't follow the rules.  One woman let her son drive her car to work every day for months before he was caught.  Somebody must have dobbed them in.
