Spare Keys Made From A Mould?

Ive seen on TV people making moulds of keys, using things like plasticene etc.
could a real key cutter make a key from that, or is it just for a crude bodge job?
Could they cut a key blank from it, or would they need to melt metal?
I was just thinking why dont people take copies & store the mould in case keys are lost, but im guess there is a reason for that?

Thanks :)

Too much unnecessary hassle would be my guess.

I'd also guess you'd need to make a positive model from your negative mould for the keycutter to work from.

I just get spare keys cut and keep them in the safe.  Far less hassle than making moulds

if you own a business just get a few extra cut of all keys, as barry said put in a safe.

Surely the best copy is one you have made in your local keycutter? Why would you want a plasticine (or soap) moulding?

Keys are usually made from blanks. If you have a moulding of the key you can identify the blank required to make a copy and then file the teeth to fit. A bit tedious but worth it if you are a baddie.

I recently went to Timsons at the Christchurch Sainsbury to get a couple of  spare keys for my house in Dorset. When I got home they didn't open the front door so turned round and went straight back. I was told it happens when you try to copy keys from a copy and not the original. He said he would try a gain but would refund my £13 if it didn't work second time. As it happened the second attempt was successful for both keys.
