I am in receipt of guarantee pension credit and am about to book another eye test. Last year I was charged over £500 even with me supplying the frames. I remember a few years ago being charged nothing at all. So are prescriptions free to people in receipt of certain benefits?

I am neither but all the information you need is on this official website

Barry has basically provided the answer that you need. You're entitled to an Optical Voucher, which will go at least part way towards the cost of your new specs. See here for the figures:

However, if you're getting charged £500 without even needing frames, I strongly suggest that it's time to think about choosing a different optician!

I used Asda Opticians about three months ago. I got my eyes tested for free (because I'm over 60) and ordered my new specs at the same time. They're varifocals, with scratch resistant and anti-reflective coatings. (I could have had a tint too, if I'd wanted, at no extra cost). The price I paid for them, including the frames, was just £45.
Could there be an issue about complicated lens types being needed, which are more expensive than usual?
It's worth pointing out that it's usually cheaper to get new specs than have old ones reglazed.
Buen, are the glasses good and is it only Asda that tests for free?
Johnk, as the link I posted earlier says eye tests for over 60s are free; Asda charges £22 for those who have to pay.
Their glasses and lenses are of similar quality to much more expensive providers
Oops I didn't notice the links by Barry and Chico, apologies
No probs, Margo.
To be fair it's very early for me, I'm only half awake :-)
Blurry morning eyes :D
Thanks for the info
they'll gouge your bank accounts and eyes for anything...
I can vouch for Asda as well. Have a look if your local one has an Optician department attached.
