The hydrant pit is simply an enclosure formed by brickwork or precast concrete which houses the hydrant.


The hydrant itself works like a very large tap; a screwdown valve is opened by the standpipe key which works like your hand opening the tap. When the screwdown valve is opened the water passes through to the outlet.
