We are trying to put an electric hob into a newly built kitchen. It is wired separately to the oven. The power is off at the moment. There is a 6mm cable ready to go to the hob. On the bottom of the hob there are 5 places for wires, 1 and 2 are Live, 3 and 4 are neutral and there is one other place.

In the 6mm cable there is only 3 wires. Do we wire just one to 1 and the others to 3?

I would get an electrician to look at it. However, I would wire the live (brown) to point 1 and 2, neutral (blue) to 3 and 4 and earth (green/yellow) to the 5th. Stand well back then turn on the power. Did you know it is now illegal to do any house wiring without the building regulations document p certification? http://www.iee.org/Publish/WireRegs/PartP.cfm

Well I agree with j2 about the 1+2=L and 3+4=N and probably the 5th is earth for the casing but before connecting to this have a close look at it, if it is the casing earth connection you should be able to see that -
1. it connects direct to the metal of the casing because it is actually part of the casing metal structure.
OR
2. that it connects to the metal casing with a green/yellow wire bolted to the metal casing somewhere.

Due to changes in the regulations it is now illegal to do this work yourself unless you get it certificated by a qualified person. You may as well pay a pro to do it as they are likely to charge as much just to certify it.

Im not sure you need part P for an installation.

You really need to real the instrucions that came with it or phone the manufacturer. Damage will invalidate your warranty.

I agree with the other post, however, follow these rules,

brown = red = live

blue = black = neutral

You most certainly do not connect the earth wire to either the live or neutral. THere will be a separate nut to secure this to.
