Last night I nearly set fire to my kitchen by carelessly leaving a tea towel on the ceramic hob which I had just turned off, but was still hot (ie- didn't look hot). It started to smoke just as I walkedaway to the toilet. If I hadn't caught a glance of the smoke the kitchen would have set on fire.

So! I need some kind of fire blanket/extinguisher suitable for elec. cookers /toasters/washing machines... Any advice on what I should get and what price they are?

Like you, I've had several close shaves with my cooker! I've got a fire blanket on my kitchen wall, which thankfully since I've had it, have never needed to use. I bought it direct from Chubb after they did a fire safety demonstration at work a few years back. I think it was under a tenner. I would think the blanket may be better than an extinguisher for the kitchen. If I remember correctly there are different types of extinguisher depending on the fire ie. electrical, paper etc. Have you got a smoke alarm? If not I suggest you get one in the meantime.

for kitchen fires you want a dry powder or co2 extinguisher, not afff or water. A fire blanket is good for chip pan fires, not having a chip pan is better!!

In hampshire, our fire brigade offers free home safety visits and advice, yours may too, try giving the council or local fire station a call

I just went on the fire safety course at work and I thought 'oh no another silly course' and I just could not believe how it changed my views. Such simple things like not leaving your TV on standby or even one case where the remote control down the side of the sofa caught fire because it was being constantly pressed and then shorted, caused a major fire. Since the course I have installed some more smoke alarms and I might get a fire blanket I think ...
I ruined some nice oven gloves by accidentally doing the same thing. I hadn't left the kitchen though, I just spotted what I had done. I turned the wrong ring on not long ago where I had rested a plate. It ruined the bottom of my plate leaving a brown burnt mark. These things are easily done.
