Hi There, I would love to buy a People Carrier, but my hubby says it would be too much too insure and too much on petrol.  Does anyone know what Insurance Category they would come under?

Thanks.

He's probably not sure about driving one?
After all they are like a small van.

Maybe better off with a diesel one?

Boot space is sometimes quite small so people and rugby kit for example are not a good idea.

try the above site for reviews for the people by the people.

They are no different than ordinary cars in the factors you mention. Their fuel costs will depend on engine size and the way they are driven, as an example a 2.0l VW Sharan will do about 30mpg, so not really much less than a comparable car.  Insurance premiums vary depending on such factors as engine size, age and purchase price, manufacturer and model, the above mentioned Sharan is a group 11, again, nothing out of the ordinary.

As I work for an insurance company I can honestly say that they are no more expensive to insure than most normal family vehicles. If you can avoid anything with a large engine capacity, or just Ford Galaxys in general (for some reason they are expensive to insure), you should be fine. Of the modern MPVs the Renault Scenic has a very low insurance grouping (some equivalent to as low as Group 5) because of its excellent safety rating in the Euro NCAP tests, widely available parts and low repair costs. Also cheap to insure is the Citroen Picasso, but if you choose this over the Scenic you'll sacrifice a little in the way of practicality.

Parkers website is excellent for giving you just these sort of stats.
I am currently looking for an MPV and have found the stats on Parkers invaluable. It states what insurance group each vehicle is rated at.
Looking forward to my test drive tomorrow.....
