When Is Thia A Family Site
91 Answers
and when isn't it a family site?
I ask looking for clarity.
Today when I used the other name of Mary Hinge( before it was changed to something like Stupid Shunt) the answer was removed. I was actually using it in reference to Keny Everett who actually used the name.
Yet a quick search (although I knew this already) shows that other posters have put the same name in type, these posters include moderators ... why the hypocrisy?

I don't think it's a matter of hypocrisy - merely a different approach.
If one moderator used the name to which you refer, they obviously decided that the use of the name was acceptable.
If another moderator decided that the use of the name and / or a link was unsuitable for a family site, they may have requested that the post be removed.
That is simply a difference of opinion between two individuals, but the Editor has the final say.
If the Editor decides that any post on any subject has been removed without due course, he has the power to reinstate it.
If the post remains absent, then it suggests that the Ed is in agreement with its removal.
The system is not perfect, but it does function within its rules wherever possible.
Not everyone will agree with decisions - but that is still the best system for operating the site freely and fairly.

Talbot - //I do yes, retro. I don't mind answers being removed (although I disagree with removing answers ... bar a very few really offensive ones)
But let us have some consistency, or is that too much to ask? //
I hope my post as offered an appropriate response to your question - the AB is always a family site, and we must be mindful that children as well as people of all ages and sensibilities view what we post, and be appropriately aware.

I don't get many answers removed now one paticular mod has stopped hounding me, but on some occasions I think tomyself
''whoever removed that answer does not understand ir''
This goes for answers from others posters, I have seen some great answers removed because it wasn't understood by whoever removed it.

No it didn't, andy. //
I am sorry to hear that.
You can assume that a moderator has removed a post because 'they didn't understand it ... ' - but that is just your assumption.
I am unsure what else you want in response to your post - the site is run and moderated by people who have different interpretations of what is and what is not suitable. That is the only way it can run.
The concept of 'consistency' only tends to be an issue when it affects an AB'er's approach personally - and that is unavoidable.

As long as there has been a society, the notion of something being meant 'humorously' and then not received as such, has been an on-going argument.
Personally, I think it adds insult to injury to suggest that someone who takes offence at something lacks a sense of humour, as well as being in possession of a thin skin.
Is a better position not to say that a point was offered with humour, and not intended to offend, and then offer an apology for any offence taken, although as advised, it was not intended?
To denigrate someone for not sharing a sense of humour smacks of an arrogant attitude lacking in empathy. We all are offended by different things said and done - taking a huffy sense of superiority is not an attractive character trait.

Talbot - //It seems to me it can depend on what side of the bed a mod gets out of ... //
I think you'll find that moderators take their responsibilities a little more seriously than to allow an occasional bad mood to influence their actions - but as I have advised, they are only human - the same as everyone on the site.

Oh you realise that do you. PMSL
I see your consistency works very well on the other OP?? //
I am talking in general terms - and I am not willing to debate my attitudes to moderation with you, because you have a long history of drawing such discussions into personal animosity.

I am making the point of inconsistency. I must remember to say "Oh you missed my irony" the next time I am accused of being offensive. It works a treat as a get out of gaol excuse depending who you are on this site.
If I had written what I read yesterday I would have had mods howling from the roofs.I mentioned to the ABer I found his comment distasteful and offensive but providing you brush it off as irony you get away with it. Must remember that trick!!
