My new PC (Acer) does not have a vga connection. So I tried the hdmi port, but this does not work. I am told it needs switching on. Can you tell me which buttons to press to get it started.

Perhaps if you gave us a clue as to which of the 40-odd Acer models you have?
I have never needed to switch a HDMI port on with a PC.

How have you connected your PC to the monitor, is it a HDMI to HDMI cable or a HDMI to VGA cable?

If your monitor has numerous inputs (HDMI, VGA, DVI etc) then you may need to set the monitor so it is looking at the input from the HDMI port.

How you do this will vary from monitor to monitor.

It will involve pressing a button on the monitor (on the side on near the base possibly) so that it set to receive a signal IN from the HDMI port rather than the VGA or DVI port.
As a follow on from my update above.

You don't say what monitor you have, so I cant give you the exact button to press.

However here is a website for Dell which explains how to set up a monitor.

http://www.dell.com/support/article/us/en/04/SLN128890/EN

If you go to section 3 which is called Correct: Video and Monitor Settings" you see that item 1 says "Set the input".

This is what you need to do, set the input on the monitor so it is looking at the HDMI input.

You probably have not got a Dell monitor so you need to find out how to do it on your monitor.

p.s. It sounds to me like you have bought a new ACER system unit but are using a screen you already had, perhaps a non Acer screen.

But you still need to select the HDMI input on it.
Are you trying to connect the PC to your tv?
