batteries' maximum current

How fast can I discharge a battery without damaging it or overheating it?
What maximum current can I draw from it?
I suppose it depends on the model, but
any info would be appreciated, whether it's alkaline or rechargable ....

To answer my question, I found a battery for RC models that is meant to discharge in 5 minutes. Still no idea about standard batteries such as NiMH AA .
