Bouguereau couldn't have known much about swimming in the sea. The waves are far too rough here. http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/4/4e/William-Adolphe_Bouguereau_%281825-1905%29_-_The_Wave_%281896%29-2.jpg/800px-William-Adolphe_Bouguereau_%281825-1905%29_-_The_Wave_%281896%29-2.jpg

No, it was a bit of a one off, tony. I'm not a regular sea swimmer.

I run through the shallows quite a lot. It's invigorating.

Have you taken the plunge recently?
Question Author
prefer to take a picnic and swim in landlocked pond
There's a painting, isn't there?

Some sort of picnic thing. Is it Manet, or someone?

Question Author
or monet?
Le Déjeuner sur l’herbe
Mmm, not sure, now.

Manet did do The Picnic ...

But it's not the picture I was thinking of. I was thinking of one with a lake in the background.
Gah, sandy and mamya both beat me to it.
Question Author
lol JJ I was just thinking about swimming
Question Author
JJ started of as swimming question but if you insist!!!
I just thought of that picture, tony ...

It's you, having a picnic by the lake, about to go for a swim.
Sandy, what an odd painting. The sea is all out of perspective with the, err, lady.
Question Author
thanks JJ - you ever swim in lakes?
So you wouldn't see seas like that at Brighton, then?
I wouldn't swim in open water for a pension. Unless my feet can touch the bottom I would be hopeless. I was once caught in a rough tide that threw me against a large rock beneath the waves, I was knocked about and winded, and only by good fortune did I make it back to dry land. It struck me that no-one saw me, my family had no idea of the fight I'd had to get back on land that day.
Question Author
ayg that's why I swim inland - not in the sea - glad you survived
No, I never swim in lakes. Not even Lac Leman.
Scary, AYG
