100years ago, you just got on with your life and your work, didn't look for praises or congratulations, but now 100 years on things are different.
The media, the internet, congratulations for your son or relative getting a degree, baby born, well done etc etc........different mentality....different people....different era.

Oh, thanks sqad, I didn't think it would be noticed if I wasn't there. I'm O.K. thanks - just got a bit bored with Answerbank so haven't been popping in so much. Also, because I am so old some of my contemporaries have stopped contributing and there are lots of new young people here that I don't really know. I mostly have a read of the posts every night so I am still here, but only a fraction of my former self. Hope you are well and still going strong.
nothing to do with WW1, though; that's just coincidence.
I can't really think of any reason why people shouldn't have things like old school ties if they want them. Gold medals seem a bit OTT, but I wouldn't call it arrogance; there's no suggestion that we're paying for them. And it is a bit odd if anyone can buy cuff links with the monogram and yet MPs can't wear it.

Though you might find it shocking arrogance, the awarding of medals within the public sector has long been commonplace. For example the Imperial Service Medal is given to all civil servants below a certain grade who have manged to work 25 years without too much sick or black marks on their file. This seems just another example. Their issue is about the design rather than the medal itself.
